Auditory Processing Disorder Help in Pasadena

Evaluating and building listening skills, one to one.

At our Pasadena center on North Lake Avenue, for families across the San Gabriel Valley.

When Listening Takes Everything Your Child Has

Some children work twice as hard to get half the information. They catch some words and miss others, then try to connect the dots. By the end of the school day they are worn out, and by homework time there is nothing left.

Often the cause is auditory processing: the way the brain perceives and makes sense of what the ears hear. It is not a hearing problem, and it is not a lack of effort. It can show up as trouble with reading, comprehension, attention, mood or friendships.

At our Pasadena center on North Lake Avenue, we evaluate auditory processing as part of every assessment and build the listening skills that are weak, one to one.

Why Listening Affects So Much More Than Hearing

Good auditory processing depends on taking in a broad range of sound frequencies. When the brain doesn’t process the full range, the effects show up in different ways.

Low Frequencies

Grounding and regulating body sounds. They help us feel settled and get us moving.

Mid Frequencies

The learning sounds. This is where most speech sounds are, which is why reading and spelling depend on them.

High Frequencies

Energizing to the brain. We need them to feel alert, focused and motivated.

Is It Auditory Processing?

These are common signs. Many children have only a few, and only an evaluation can tell you what is really going on.

At Home and With Friends

  • Often asks you to repeat things
  • Mishears and then misunderstands
  • Struggles to follow conversations in noisy places
  • Has trouble knowing where a sound is coming from
  • Often feels anxious or lost, or withdraws in groups

At School

  • Has trouble following oral directions
  • Seems not to be paying attention
  • Has difficulty with phonics, reading or spelling
  • Gets tired during listening tasks
  • Has trouble sounding out or pronouncing words

Auditory Processing Questions

What is auditory processing?

Auditory processing is not hearing. It is the way the brain perceives and thinks about the information that comes in through the ears. A child can pass a hearing test and still have weak auditory processing.

Do you diagnose auditory processing disorder?

No. We don’t provide an official diagnosis. Our Functional Evaluation shows the types and extent of auditory challenges affecting your child’s learning so we can build those skills. A formal diagnosis comes from an audiologist.

Why does my child seem anxious or tired after school?

Listening takes a lot of energy when the information coming in is spotty. Many children with weak auditory processing are easily exhausted, avoid group settings or feel lost, and those feelings often ease as listening gets easier.

Can the evaluation be done remotely?

Yes. The Functional Evaluation can be done at our Pasadena center or remotely. Your Learning Specialist will talk through the options with you.

Do you take insurance?

Programs are private pay. Financing options are available, and our Learning Specialists can walk you through costs on the free call.
